At Lowerplace, we value art as an integral part of our children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. After all, art is one of the highest forms of human creativity! Through our art curriculum, we aim to inspire, engage and challenge our children to be creative thinkers. We want to equip our children with the knowledge and skills, which allow them opportunity to express themselves by experimenting, inventing and creating their own works of art. As well as developing their skills, we will provide the children with opportunities to research and explore the work of a diverse range of fantastic artists (both past and present) and use what they have discovered about them as inspiration for their own pieces. Children will be given the freedom to record their observations, thoughts and ideas in their own personal sketchbook, which will they will continually add to as they move through school. It is our hope that each and every one of our children will leave Lowerplace with this core belief: ‘We are all artists!’

Our art curriculum develops the children’s skills and knowledge in the three following areas;

• Drawing
• Painting
• Sculpting

In EYFS the children will learn to:

• explore and play with a wide range of media and materials.
• express and communicate their thoughts, feelings and ideas in different ways.
• develop their fine motor skills and mark making through a variety of engaging activities, in readiness for the techniques they will be using in KS1.

In KS1 the children will learn to:

• draw a variety of objects from observation, showing increasing accuracy.
• recognise different types of sketching pencils (HB, 2B, 4B and 8B) and explore how these can be used to create lines varying in darkness and thickness as well as learning basic shading techniques.
• identify the primary colours and know these can be mixed to create secondary colours, working with varying brush sizes.
• experiment with a variety of media, exploring how to combine them create different textures.
• sculpt with clay using a variety of techniques (rolling, cutting, coiling, scoring etc).

In KS2 the children will learn to:

• sketch a collection of observational and imagined drawings, developing their proportional accuracy whilst also beginning to include expression.
• continue to work with different grades of pencils (including further shading techniques) and use them to create different tones, patterns and textures.
• work with a wider range of drawing implements (e.g. charcoal, chalk and pastels) and explore how each can be used to create varying tones and textures.
